Pet Of The Month - Watson

Watson is a male Border Collie who is about to turn 16 years old this month!
I received a call from Watson's owner in the fall of 2005. She was looking for
some "extra special care for an extra special guy"! In discussing the situation
further, I found out that Watson was 13 years old and had lost his vision. At first,
I was very unsure on how I would care for a dog who was blind. I couldn't
imagine how it would be as an older blind dog. As soon as I met Watson, he
made me understand that being a blind isn't all that bad. Watson gained my
trust in the first week. We were able to come up with some games and activities
that made our time together lots of fun for Watson. In doing some research, I
discovered that a dogs least relied upon sense is vision. When a dog is born it
relies on hearing, touch and smell to survive. Puppies do not open their eyes
until they are a couple weeks old. Watson proved to me that being blind did
require some extra special care, but wasn't going to keep him from enjoying life.
Over the past 2.5 years, I have spent lots of time caring for Watson when his
owner was busy at work or away from home. As he aged, Watson developed
Canine Vestibular Disease and Inner Ear Infections. Although these conditions
are very serious for a dog his age, Watson fought them hard and has
recovered. Watson leads a very happy life and is an inspiration to me in how
he has handled all of the rough times. Everyday I see Watson,
he shows me that life is a gift. Watson knows he has it good!
It would not surprise me if he lives to be 20 years old.
